Sisters and Brothers of Local 359,

The E-Board of Local 359 would like to wish everyone a happy and prosperous Labor Day holiday.

I know many will be here working and we thank you for covering while others get the time off…….

there is a pot luck picnic Monday for anyone that would like to attend. The Solidarity Committee was on the line every weekend here in Waterford throughout the entire strike…… take some time to stop by and thank them all for their support…..

Also is a Labor Day Pledge from President Mario Cilento who was at our Picket line day 1 from NYC. He was instrumental on supplying support and resources from the NYS AFL-CIO to our fight and we thank him……. Read below…..

Last, next Friday evening in Albany, the annual Labor Day Parade and party for Labor will take place.

Its in the evening and we will be walking with Labor Unions from all across upstate NY from the Capital to Corning preserve. Every one of these groups also supported us during our Strike and they asked us to bring our Rat on the trailer for the parade. We could use some help if anyone is interested……. There will be food and music at the preserve for your families along with having fireworks…… wear your RED shirts and stop by and thank everyone for supporting Local 359 ………

Picnic and celebration

Noon to 5 p.m. Monday, Sept. 4, 2017

Cook Park, Village of Colonie

It’s a potluck picnic, so bring a dish to pass—entrée, salad, or dessert.

Hamburgers, hot dogs, and soft drinks provided. Vegetarian selections for the hamburgers and hot dogs will be available. In addition to food and drink, there will be some short speeches, and there will be music, including the Solidarity Singers.

Awards this year: Dominick Patrignani and Amber Brooks, Local Union Leaders of the Year (Momentive strike); Union Organizer of the Year, Rachel Bailey; Environmental Activist of the Year, Tina Lieberman; Climate Justice Award to Willie White and Rev. Marc Johnson.

This year’s theme is:

NO LIMITS FOR WOMEN

As always, the event is free and open to everyone, so let’s not forget the reason for the holiday—the celebration of the vital contributions

of working women and men.

Join us and have a great Labor Day!

(Directions: In the Village of Colonie, take Lincoln Avenue, off Central Avenue, for about a mile, then take a left on Shambrook Parkway, look for the Solidarity Committee pavilion.)

As we enjoy the fellowship of our loved ones at a barbecue, fireworks or other community events, it also is important to reflect on the best ways working people can come together to build an economy that works for all of us. I encourage everyone to join with your sisters and brothers to participate in a Labor Day event near you.

In growing numbers, working families across the country are taking action to win the freedom to negotiate a fair return on our work so we can provide for our families. As a result of our unity at the bargaining table and the ballot box, working people in 2016 won the largest pay increase in years. A strong majority of Americans have a positive view of unions. Working people are organizing, from traditional manufacturing, to higher education to the digital economy. New York continues to lead the way with your support!

But our fight is not just about union members, we fight for all working people. Just over the past few years we fought for and won; raising the minimum wage, ensuring paid family leave, increasing unemployment insurance benefits, protecting workers’ compensation and securing Buy American legislation to help create and maintain good manufacturing jobs here in New York State. And, it’s these accomplishments that have put a gigantic target on our collective backs.

We will not back down. With your support and our community partners we will continue standing up to the corporate-backed politicians who for decades have continued to take away the freedoms unions have won for all of us. Whether it’s the expansion of misleading “right to work” laws, rollbacks on workplace safety or the assault on our pay and benefits by Republicans in Washington DC, it is critical that we continue to organize and mobilize around an agenda that gives working people the freedom to join together. We will not be divided. In particular on this Labor Day, don't forget our sisters and brothers still fighting against the very worst of corporate greed at Spectrum communications.

In closing, I want to take a moment to ask all of you to keep Texas and the working families devastated by Hurricane Harvey in your thoughts and prayers. As we know union members are often times on the front lines of these disasters, serving their communities and helping rebuild. We also know from Superstorm Sandy that rebuilding and emergency help can be a costly commitment, that is why I am asking all who can, to please take a moment to donate to the Texas Workers Relief Fund.
