TO OUR FRIENDS AND ALLIES: VERIZON STRUGGLE CONTINUES
CWA & IBEW NEED A CONTRACT FOR VERIZON WORKERS
Background. The struggle continues. . . last August, 45,000 members of CWA & IBEW went on strike in order to pressure Verizon to bargain. The company went back to the negotiating table, but many issues remain unresolved and no contract is in sight. Verizon wants to eliminate jobs and promote outsourcing. Workers want to save their health benefits.
Continued Activism. Since the strike, workers and allies wrote letters, rallied, marched and leafleted in order to bring about a resolution. Verizon workers are ramping up their activity as spring approaches. For example, CWA and TWU members in New York City are marching and rallying for good jobs at both Verizon and the MTA.
Why Now? Ongoing pressure on Verizon is critical this winter and spring. There is a need to preserve middle class jobs and to fight against the corporate greed that allows Verizon to shirk their fair share of taxes and reward executives with multi-million dollar compensation plans. Verizon’s top 5 executives made $283 million in the last 4 years. And, from 2008-2010 Verizon did not pay any federal corporate income taxes, despite billions in profits. The time is now to ramp up the campaign.
What Can You Do? Join the March 22 National Day of Action against Verizon. Get in contact with a local coordinator and mobilize your members for rallies and store leafleting.
